Why should I create an undisclosed (or discreet) email list?
Sending out mass emails that shows everybody’s email address, allows anyone on that list to copy and use that list for their own purposes. Ever wonder why you are suddenly receiving lots more SPAM/junk mail? The one using your list may not consider their mass mailing to be SPAM, but you most likely do when you haven’t asked to be on that list!
How do I create an undisclosed list?
Since I use a Mac, I don’t know specifically how you do it on a PC. However, I will give you the basic process. If someone can send me specific PC instructions for me to pass on here, I’d appreciate it!
The easiest method:
In your email “TO” field – put your own email address.
In the “BCC” field – put all the emails for your mass mailing.
What is the BCC field?
The BCC field is a discreet or unseen CC field.
Test it out:
Send yourself a test message by putting your email address in the BCC field! Pretty nifty don’t you think?
Tips:
IF you don’t see your BCC field in your list of TO/CC/BCC/SUBJECT/FROM fields while creating your email, check to see if there is an icon button that will list more actions. Or you may need to look under your email preferences. Sorry, again I don not know exactly how it works with a PC or your email package.
While we are on this SUBJECT, be sure and put a short descriptive, possibly eye-catching SUBJECT into your SUBJECT field prior to sending. There are three reasons for this:
- If you do not put in any subject, the ANTI-SPAMMER might dump your email. That means your recipient will never see the message!
- Putting in a descriptive SUBJECT allows receiver to get a quick idea of what it is. Busy people often delete emails without reading them, unless they know it is specifically for them OR they are curious by an eye-catching phrase.
- When a recipient replies to your email, it also has meaning to you regarding what that email was about.
Remember above where I mentioned “The easiest method”? You can make your mailings look more professional with some little tricks:
- Learn how to use your email address book if you don’t know how already. Your address book wants First/Last-Name or Business-Name when you set up your recipients’ accounts. Set up one for yourself where you call yourself “Undisclosed Listing” or “Private List”, etc. Then instead of seeing your name in the TO field, you will see “Private List”! NOTE: You already exist in your address book, but create yourself again using your “Private List” name.
- Create a Group folder for your Business mass-mailings and add your recipients to it. Include your own name (as explained in 1. above).
- Happy professional mailing! May the force be with you . . .
